Breakthrough in enterprise information technology: hybrid cloud

2017 / 13/11
They say this could be the technology that will define enterprise IT in the foreseeable future. What is a hybrid cloud and how can it help your enterprise succeed?

hybrid cloud

What is hybrid cloud technology?

Hybrid cloud is not a product or a device. It is a brand new aspect of IT and Cloud computing. It incorporates the two well-known types of cloud into itself: private and public cloud. Besides that, a hybrid cloud makes it possible for the two types of cloud to be interconnected, so you can store the appropriate data and tasks in the most appropriate place. A hybrid cloud, by definition, must be built in a way that the two or more different types of cloud be able to function on their own, but they must build up a unit that allows the user to take advantage of the qualities of the different types.

In the case of hybrid clouds, since they are built up from ones of different types and technologies, the biggest challenge is integrity, because you must ensure interconnectivity between the clouds. And these clouds are likely to be operated by different methods and authorities (as seen before, they have to be able to function on their own – including management).

However, if you have a hybrid cloud that consists of clouds operated by others, users may find it problematic that they don’t have a complete picture of the system and the status of the components. The best solution for this problem is a so-called “orchestration layer” which communicates with each cloud service through an API. With the help of such a layer you can manage and maintain all layers from a central dashboard.

Why use hybrid cloud technology

The biggest advantage of a hybrid cloud is the high level of flexibility. Most companies have to process and store a lot of internal and external workflows and data. And there is no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to cloud computing. It must also be determined how much and what types of data are stored in which cloud. Think about what would be best for your company: if you have processes that can run in the background at night, then it is better if a public cloud is the dominant one. However, for real-time tasks that require a high level of security, it it better to choose a private cloud.

A hybrid cloud also gives the sense of security because even at the biggest (public) cloud service providers can have their lows: outages or even security breaches. In this case, it’s reassuring to know that workflows do not have to stop, because some parts of it are stored in the private cloud.

What is multi-cloud technology?

If you don’t want to use only one type of cloud, you should not only consider hybrid cloud technology, but more and more people are choosing multi-cloud technology as well. The difference between this type and hybrid cloud is that you don’t use only one public cloud service, but more than one of them. The advantage of this is that if the service of one of the providers is down for some reason, you can still use your private cloud and the storage space of the other service provider. Besides that, you should also consider multi-cloud from a security point of view.

The drawback of multi-clouds though is that you have to manage even more storage and infrastructure. The advice of experts is never to start working with more than one cloud service at a time. It’s better to start small and work out the strategies of each element of the system one at a time. If you do it right, you will be able to manage all of them separately and together in the end.

How can you take advantage of hybrid cloud technology?

Some real examples from Upwork show how hybrid clouds can be used:

  • at video streaming sites where the own infrastructure of the company cannot handle the large number of users at weekends, uses a hybrid cloud in these periods, so their service is available even if many people are using the video site simultaneously.
  • a website specialised in e-commerce uses a public cloud to manage their CRM system, and their own private cloud helps them create and test new products based on data from the CRM system. This example shows it very well why the two clouds have to be able to function perfectly separately as well as together as a unit.

The question of security

As you could see, hybrid cloud technology has a lot of advantages, but it also raises a few questions as to what to be aware of if you decide to apply it in your company. The most important one of them is security.

Some people find it surprising, but by applying a hybrid cloud, you can actually count on a high level of security. The use of different cloud types enables each cloud to have different login data and admin roles. This was it is much simpler to determine who can access what within a company. Besides that, some service providers also have a solution where servers and cloud services found on different devices can communicate with each other via a private network, so instead of the solutions which operate completely separately, you can have full integration.

As you can see, a hybrid cloud can have a lot of advantages. Both SMEs and multinational companies that operate with a big number of data should consider using it. Hybrid cloud computing could be the technology that will be used by everyone in the near future - because it is an important cornerstone of digital transformation and innovation.
